SGU is seeking a senior officer for our vessel Ocean Surveyor. When the need arises, you will have the opportunity to come in and work as a chief mate or, exceptionally, as a captain for a period of a few days up to two weeks.

The vessel is operated by SGU to provide opportunities for activities aimed at giving Sweden the best possible conditions for Swedish industry, infrastructure investments at sea, and a sustainable use of the sea as a long-term resource. With Ocean Surveyor, SGU investigates the structure of the seabed, its environmental chemical load, sediment thickness, and the geological conditions of the sea for animal and plant life. The field season runs from early May to early October.

Responsibilities

As a chief mate, you will assist the captain with navigation, line measurements using sonar systems, and sampling. You will be on watch during operations around the clock and are responsible for the vessel's safety and lifesaving equipment, as well as medical care onboard. You are designated as a diving leader onboard. As a chief mate, you will also assist in geological sampling work.

Qualifications

We are looking for someone who has:

  • minimum Class III certification
  • several years of experience as a senior officer.
  • ECDIS, Basic safety, AFF, GOC, Medical Care in accordance with STCW Manila
  • valid medical certificate for seafarers
  • the working language onboard is Swedish, so you must be fluent in Swedish, both spoken and written. You should also be able to speak and write in English without hindrance.

Desirable experiences and qualifications:

  • experience on research vessels
  • DP experience
  • coastal and archipelago navigation
  • hydrographic surveying

Your application must include an extract from the Transport Agency's register to substantiate your qualifications and experiences.

About the employment

Employment type: Fixed-term employment as needed during the field season, from March to the end of November 2026. Immediate start according to agreement.

The position is security classified, and a security check including a background check will be conducted on the final candidate. Swedish citizenship and an approved security clearance are required before a hiring decision is made.
